Don Thiergard
Artist Biography
I was very young when my mother put a Leica camera into my hands and told me to take some pictures. She was an avid photographer and a charter member of the Great Neck Camera Club. I’m sure my interest in photography stemmed from this early “exposure”. I was born and raised on Long Island. A graduate of Manhasset Public Schools, I earned a Bachelors degree in Mathematics from Hamilton College and a Masters degree in Math Education from the University of Pennsylvania. I taught Mathematics in the Roslyn Public Schools for 37 years and at The Portledge School for 2 years.
While my career and family occupied most of my time, I still managed, on occasion, to spend a few hours in the basement under a safelight developing and printing black and white photographs. I used my mother’s old Leica as well as a Canon and Olympus. In 2001, I moved from film to digital technology, which opened up a whole new world for me.
I became a member of The Art League and Huntington Arts Council and enrolled in some introductory classes in Photoshop. But unquestionably, my love for photography began when I joined the Huntington Camera Club in 2009. I owe a great deal of thanks to the many members of the Club whose expertise, encouragement, and suggestions have inspired my passion for photography.
I lean toward landscapes. I enjoy being at the places where I take the photos as much as capturing the images. I look to select a portion of a scene in front of me that has a unique set of light and shadow conditions that will never present itself exactly the same way again. Above all, my hope is to shoot an image that has an impact on the viewer.
Finally, I thank my wife, Linda, for her thoughts and unbounded patience while I swerve off the side of the road or walk a distance to get a shot.
