Book Clubs

Book Drop
Use the Book Drop to return books 24/7. The library does not recommend returning media using the
Book Drop. If it is necessary to return DVDs, CDs, or audiobooks, please secure items with a rubber band and place items in a plastic bag.

Coltrane Computer
John Coltrane in Dix Hills and at the Half Hollow Hills Community Library. Click here to learn more about his life and music.

    • The home of jazz music greats John Coltrane and Alice Coltrane is located in Dix Hills and has been placed on the National Register of Historic Places. The Coltrane Family lived here from 1964 to 1973.
      It was at this home that John Coltrane composed "A Love Supreme." The historic landmark designation is a significant tribute to the home where the Coltranes impacted the music world.

    • "The Friends of the Coltrane Home" have partnered with the Half Hollow Hills Community Library
      in Dix Hills to put together a searchable database of Coltrane's music and photos for you to browse,
      listen to, and learn about this great jazz artist. Much of the information has been donated by "collector supreme" Yasuhiro "Fuji" Fujioka and includes exclusive photos not found elsewhere. The computer is located on the main floor at the Dix Hills building.

Community Service Hours for Teens

Computer Tutor
Schedule a 30 minute appointment with a librarian or high school student, who will work with you on developing the computer skills you need. Some sessions will require a basic ability with computers,
and all instruction will be at a basic level only.

Conversation Groups

    • New English Speakers' Conversation Group
      Come join us for casual conversation; Tuesday mornings from 10 am to 12 pm in the Dix Hills Seminar Room, on the Lower Level. For information call Catherine Given at (631) 498-1225.

    • Conversations in French
      Is your French a little rusty, planning a trip to France? Join this fun group and practice speaking French
      in a comfortable and relaxed atmosphere. All levels are welcome. This group usually meets the first Tuesday of the month at 7 pm at Melville. Click the link above or check the newsletter for exact dates
      and time.


    • Black & White – 10¢ per page
    • Color – 25¢ per page
    • Scan to a USB Drive – 10¢ per page; If you do not have a USB Drive, they are available to purchase for $10 each

The copier can make change for up to a $5 bill. A reusable vendor card is available in the Internet Room at Dix Hills and at both buildings' Circulation Desks.

Internet Policy

Checkout a Kindle Paperwhite with exclusive content not available in regular print. Our Kindles are loaded with over 60 different titles. The eReaders circulate for 14 days and cannot be renewed. They are available to reserve through the catalog, or you may call the library at (631) 421-4530 to reserve one.

    • In order to encourage on-time returns, overdue charges of $5.00 per day will be assessed for late return of an eReader.
    • eReaders and all accessories (charging cable and zip sleeve) must be handed to a Half Hollow Hills Community Library staff member at the Reference Desk in the Dix Hills building. They may not be returned to any other public library or in the book drop box. Please do not leave the eReader at any
      desk, if a staff member is not present to receive it from you.
    • Please do not delete any titles downloaded to the eReader.
    • As with all Library materials, we request you return the eReader in as good a condition as you
      received it. Please ensure that it is kept safe from spills, dirt and rough handling.

Laptops are available to borrow at the Dix Hills building for in-library use. Get some work done with
Microsoft Office or just browse the internet with our free wi-fi. Stop by the Circulation Desk to check one out. Laptop tables with power outlets are located between the biography and magazine areas on the main level.

Meeting Room Reservations
To reserve a meeting room at the library, complete this form, or print out the Request for Use of Library Facilities application and return to the Administration Office. A room request is not confirmed until approved by the Library Director. For questions, call (631) 498-1271.

Outreach Services

Proctoring Exams
Contact the Reference Department at (631) 498-1236 to schedule an appointment. You must have a
Half Hollow Hills Library card.

Public Internet Computers
There are 12 public Internet computers in front of the Reference Department in Dix Hills and 6 at Melville.
In addition to filtered Internet access, each computer has IrfanView (a photo editing program), Microsoft Office 2015, Acrobat Reader, WinWay Resume builder, a CD drive, and USB input. There is no burning software but you can purchase a USB stick to save your work. You need a current Suffolk County library card to log in; each session is 90 minutes long but can be extended at the librarians’ discretion. Guest passes are available for adults without a library card. Children younger than 18 need a picture ID (student ID is acceptable) AND a current library card with parental permission (permission form must be signed in person by a parent or guardian at the library.)

Printing is available with a print card, purchased for $1 on a copy car5d dispenser by the public computers. The price of printing is 10¢ a page for black and white, 25¢ for color.

Scan your pictures or documents with our scanner located next to the Reference desk in our Dix Hills building.

Tax Forms / Tax Preparation
Select Federal and State Tax forms are available during tax season in the adult reference department.
During tax season, trained counselors will be available to provide free assistance in completing your income tax forms. Details are available in the January/February edition of The First R.

Free wireless Internet access is available throughout the Dix Hills and Melville buildings. Our network name is HHHCL.
